This question has been asked since the time of the Reformation itself, when "our enemies falsly accused us of preaching that works are harmful" (cf. the Augsburg Confession). Of course, some Orthodox reformers DID teach that! And we've been struggling ever since. We forget (accidently or on purpose!) that the GIFT IS A CALL!! Sound familiar?!? My favorite dead horse to beat.
I think a follow up question is: What do we do about it?!?
